Nikkei Futures Updates

Japan’s Nikkei share average experienced an uptick on Thursday, bolstered by an enhanced profit outlook from chip equipment manufacturer Advantest. However, a significant drop in South Korea’s Samsung Electronics dampened investor sentiment, even in light of the company’s record earnings, as reported. The Nikkei concluded the morning session with an increase of 0.3% at 64,131.28, having moderated its gains after reaching a peak of 1.3% earlier in the session. Advantest emerged as the primary driver behind the index’s upward movement, contributing 408 points to its overall increase of 177 points.

The broader Topix index declined by 0.3%, settling at 3,979.89, following a period of trading that remained predominantly lower throughout the morning session. Technology earnings across Japan, South Korea, and the United States have remained a focal point for investors, as reported by Reuters. South Korea’s SK Hynix bolstered sentiment on Wednesday, while overnight trading on Wall Street presented a mixed bag of signals from leading technology firms. Alphabet shares declined in after-hours trading following the announcement of significant cash expenditures by the Google parent, which heightened investor apprehensions. Microsoft, meanwhile, reported cash flow that exceeded expectations. Advantest shares experienced an increase of 5.4%, having previously surged by as much as 9.1%.

The company raised its full-year operating profit forecast by 14% on Wednesday after the market closed, enhancing optimism regarding demand for semiconductor testing equipment. However, gains in other semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related equities diminished as the session advanced. Tokyo Electron experienced a decline of 0.9%, whereas SoftBank Group saw a decrease of 0.6%. Hitachi experienced the most significant percentage decline on the Nikkei, plummeting 8.7% even after increasing its full-year profit forecast. Investors exhibited a degree of caution in anticipation of a packed earnings calendar and the forthcoming policy decision from the Bank of Japan on Friday.

Hundreds of Japanese companies are set to disclose their results on Thursday and Friday, contributing to the ambiguity surrounding the short-term trajectory of equities. The report indicated that market participants were taking a more cautious approach in anticipation of these events, with investors likely decreasing their risk exposure due to the uncertainty surrounding corporate earnings and monetary policy. Market breadth exhibited a negative trend, as 123 of the Nikkei’s 225 constituents experienced declines, in contrast to 99 that advanced, while three stocks remained unchanged.
