Japan’s Nikkei 225 index was down nearly 3% and South Korea’s Kospi index stumbled 2.7% in morning moves. Chinese stocks also sank in early trade.
Tokyo shares have closed with modest gains after a choppy day on Asian markets.
The Nikkei 225 index rose 0.4%, or 80.40 points, to end at 22,091.18, while Australia’s ASX 200 slipped 0.2%, or 14.10 points, to close at 5,829.00.
Shares in Hong Kong rose while and South Korea stocks eased in afternoon trading.
