Chinese shares fell on today after US President Donald Trump’s latest threats to escalate a trade war with China.
Last week, he said he could move “very soon” to impose tariffs on $200bn worth of products with taxes on another $267bn “ready to go on short notice”. That means virtually all of China’s US exports could become subject to duties.
In China, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index slumped 1.4% to 26,606.75, while the Shanghai Composite was down 0.9% at 2,677.67.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index was flat, while South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index rose 0.2%.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 was up 0.3% after revised data showed the economy growing at its fastest pace since 2016.
